Music is truly a gift from God. The music curriculum at St. Michael School is meant to help students become active participants and listeners in a world filled with music. It goes beyond simply listening or observing, but realizing the affect and effect music has on people. Studies have proven that those who receive music training in any form whether its general music taught in class or private lessons, do much better in other subjects such as math and science. It is our goal to develop wholesome, well-rounded individuals who are “active Christians, life-long learners, effective communicators, problem solvers, self evaluators, and responsible citizens.” Our curriculum in music helps to accomplish this goal.
Each grade must be earned. As some students realize, you do not receive an automatic “A” in this class. Although a student’s grade in music does not factor into a student’s overall GPA, it is important to do well in this class as it will remain on record especially for other potential schools (such as high schools) to review and can play a pivotal role in a child being accepted. As mentioned above, a curriculum in music also has great benefits in the overall education of each student. Students who do well in music tend to also excel in other subjects. Students are evaluated based on how actively and productively he or she participates in class as well as the timely completion of assignments, tests, and projects. Students are not graded on their skill level or proficiency of playing an instrument or singing.
Students in Grade 8 will be strengthening their knowledge of basic music theory including note and rhythm identification. They will also be utilizing this knowledge to play basic melodic lines using an instrument such as the ukulele. Students are also expected to complete a composer project at the end of the year.
